Clarence Pitre

Clarence Pitre was born on June 20,1900 in Rustico PEI, the son of Joseph Pitre and Catherine Gallant. Clarence attended the local school in Rustico. At 14 he pursued his studies with the Holy Cross Fathers in Memramcook and later with the Eudist Fathers at the Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax. He was ordained in St. Augustine's Church, Rustico, on June 27,1926 by Bishop Louis O'Learly of Charlottetown. Following his ordination, Father Pitre taught Latin, French and commercial subjects at St. Dunstan's College. At the same time, he was placed in charge of the Parish of St. Eugene's, Covehead. He was appointed pastor of Kelly's Cross in 1930, where he remained until his appointment to St. Augustine's on July 1,1937. In 1943 Father Pitre called a parish meeting to discuss the building of the church in Hunter River. Father Pitre became the first parish priest for St. Mary's of the People Parish in Hunter River in 1949. In 1956 he was appointed to St. Anthony's Parish in Bloomfield. On his retirement he moved to Charlottetown where he died on August 20,1980.
